On March 13, 2009, the founder of The Zeitgeist Movement, Peter Joseph, organized this event in an effort to raise awareness of TZM's cause, and it went viral around the world, with other local groups of TZM organizing their own local Zeitgeist Day (Z-Day) events in their area.
The event was held in the auditorium at the Borough of Manhattan Community College on Chambers Street near the West Side Highway, New York City. The tickets to attend were $10 and were completely sold out.
This was the first Z-Day event, that would evolve into an annual, global program for the next 15 years.
