Welcome to the third Zeitgeist European Meet‑Up of 2019 in Enköping, Sweden!
It was a full‑week international event during the first week of July 2019, giving a warm welcome to both native Swedes and guests who came from abroad to Enköping. Attendees took part in an adventure that anyone could join, especially those who wanted to explore how people could live sustainably then and in the future.
Date
01 July 2019 – 08 July 2019
Location
Westerlundska Gymnasiet Enköping (Sandbrogatan 2, 745 25 Enköping, Sweden)
Enköping, which lay close to Sweden’s first city and its first known town, also sat near Viking burial mounds, runes and other important cultural and historical sites. The school gymnasium served as the main building for accommodation, meals, and several parts of the programme.
Programme
Less than a month remained before the event began, so the detailed schedule was released shortly after the final preparations were completed.
What participants expected
The goals of that year’s European Meet‑Up emphasized teamwork, appreciation of humanity, overcoming isolation, and learning from ancestors—especially regarding how they had lived sustainably. Swedish and other Scandinavian cultures predominated, featuring contemporary music and arts alongside old Norse (Viking‑age and earlier) culture and music rooted in Sweden’s history.
Present‑day global problems were discussed. Some of the basic questions asked were:
- What are the major challenges?
- What are possible solutions?
- What will WE do?
Much time was set aside for participants to get to know one another, build new friendships, and reconnect with old friends in an atmosphere of community and fellowship.
Another theme of the event that there were no leaders or stars for the event; instead, everyone understood themselves as performers and co‑creators.
Accommodations
The school provided many rooms for event activities, presentations, meals, bathrooms and showers, as well as lodging. Because the school did not supply beds, guests were asked to bring sleeping bags. For those who preferred a different option, recommended hotels and hostels in the area were presented as good alternatives.
Arriving at the event
From Arlanda International Airport (Stockholm):
Attendees took FLIXBUS from terminals 5 or 2/3 to Enköping Central Station (both a train and bus station). Tickets were available through the FLIXBUS app or kiosks near the airport arrivals area. Information centres at the terminals helped travellers book, purchase, or locate the desired transport.
From Stockholm Central Station (T‑Centralen):
Numerous trains run constantly from Stockholm to Enköping.
Enköping could also be reached by train, bus or car from other locations. It lay conveniently along the E18, one of Sweden’s major European highways.
Detailed maps for parking, directions from the station to the school, and check‑in/check‑out times and procedures were provided after ticket purchase and as the event dates approached. Special badges and registration procedures ensured a safe, smooth event and allowed all authorised participants easy entry to meals and activities.

What is the Zeitgeist European Meet‑Up?
“Zeitgeist” means the cultural climate of an era; “European” denotes the location within the European continent; and “Meet‑Up” refers to a gathering of people for a purpose. Consequently, the Zeitgeist European Meet‑Up was an international gathering held in Europe that explored the cultural climate of the region—past and present—while focusing on sustainable living, harmony with nature and each other, and the responsible use of technology and science. Anyone, regardless of nationality or background, was welcome to participate.
The first Meet‑Up took place in Rotterdam in December 2015. It introduced longer, multi‑day events held in a school, where participants not only attended seminars and Q&A sessions but also lodged, ate together, and enjoyed activities such as dancing. Attendees left with new perspectives and a stronger sense of connection.
The second Meet‑Up occurred in Kyiv, Ukraine, in the first week of July 2017. Held in a rented hotel on the city’s outskirts, it featured more free time for socialising, outdoor activities (dancing, swimming, sauna, city tours), and an emphasis on Ukrainian culture. Live simultaneous translation between English and Ukrainian was introduced for the first time. Participants reported feeling highly motivated and connected, describing it as perhaps the best TZM event to date. Review video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0yByxnkxvs
Primary Goal
The organisers aimed to conduct a successful event from which attendees would benefit and never forget. They sought to raise activity and awareness in Sweden and the broader Scandinavian region, inspire participation in future TZM events and similar groups, and encourage collaboration worldwide to improve the planet. They also hoped to motivate foreigners to return to Sweden, explore its Viking heritage, and learn about modern Swedish society and its renowned welfare model. The event was presented as a starting point for a larger movement toward a better world.
The revolution was then – kom igen nu!
